The mono HP LaserJet P2055dn is a mid-range printer that is fast and offers good quality prints.

The P2055dn can be bought for about 275 and has automatic duplexing included. It has two paper trays, a 150 sheet one at the top and a 250 sheet one at the bottom. 128mb of memory comes as standard, although this can be increase to 384mb, as do USB and ethernet connections.

It is possible to change print density from the P2055dn itself and the printer also includes a monochrome LCD screen. Dust can be removed from moving parts of the printer by using the inbuilt cleaning mode and firewall and security settings can be modified to use either HTTP or HTTPS protocols.

The simple web-based interface allows you to check the status of the cartridges and various statistics. The interface also makes it possible to configure print settings on the P2055dn and administrators can set up the firewall policy.

Print settings for the P2055dn are split into 600dpi, 1200dpi FastRes and 1200dpi ProRes modes. Better quality prints are produced by the ProRes mode even though it has the same dpi as FastRes but it is slower. The P2055dn can produce its first page in roughly 9.5 seconds and further pages at roughly 35 pages a minute using either the 600dpi or 1200dpi FastRes settings.

The P2055dn takes about 14.5 seconds to print its first page using ProRes after which it pauses on every second page so that the overall speed is about 14.5 pages per minute or roughly four seconds per page.

A quiet mode has been built into the P2055dn which reduces noise but also slows print speed considerably.

It is also possible to alter the line density of the P2055dn when using ProRes which is highly unusual in a printer of this price.

The print quality of the P2055dn is very good considering its modest price. Results were clear and sharp.

The HP Laserjet P2055dn toner cartridge fitted to the printer when new is the 05A cartridge (HPCE505A), this is a low capacity cartridge and it is advisable to replace with the 05X cartridge. This replacement cartridge although more expensive will yield almost three times as many prints and will lead to a lower cost per print.

The HP LaserJet P2055dn is great value for money at the price producing excellent, quick prints and as such is highly recommended.
